TO: Genesis & Energy Online

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have recently visited the Greenpeace Clean Energy Guide website at www.CleanEnergyGuide.org and I see that Genesis and its retail brand Energy Online is listed as the worst ranked company in the RED which means you currently burn coal, oil or gas for electricity - or plan to do so in the future.

Fossil fuels such as these release carbon dioxide which directly contributes to climate change - the biggest threat facing our environment, economy and society.

Genesis owns and operates New Zealand's only major coal fired power station at Huntly. This facility belches out millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide each year and other nasties like mercury, dioxin and arsenic.

About seventy five percent of your company's installed capacity is based on fossil fuels. Most of Genesis' future generation plans are for gas and the company has no policy to only generate electricity from renewable sources in the future.

I'm glad to see that Genesis does offer an option for customers who generate their own renewable electricity on site, to sell excess electricity back into the lines network, though I think that you should be paying at least retail price for the electricity generated.

I strongly urge you to establish a policy of only investing in clean renewable energy sources, commit to phasing Huntly out within the next 5 years and then phase out all fossil fuels in your portfolio.

Yours sincerely,

TO: Contact & Empower

Dear sir/ madam,

I have recently visited the Greenpeace Clean Energy Guide website at www.CleanEnergyGuide.org and I see that Contact and its retail brand Empower is listed in the RED which means you currently burn coal, oil or gas for electricity - or plan to do so in the future.

Fossil fuels such as these release carbon dioxide, which directly contributes to climate change - the biggest threat facing our environment, economy and society.

I understand from the Clean Energy Guide website that your company has taken big steps recently to invest only in renewable energy until 2008 and that you have developed a plan to cut greenhouse emissions.

I also note that you offer good energy efficiency and conservation programmes and offer an option for customers who generate their own renewable electricity on site, to sell excess electricity back into the lines network.

I'm very pleased to see that you have listened to public and customers concerns and have taken these steps to protect the climate. Congratulations!

However Contact still has a lot of improvements to make. Contact still has gas plans in the future, even though these are "on hold" until 2008, and over half of Contact's current installed capacity is gas fired.

I also think that you should extend your offer for customers to feed back excess electricity that they generate back into the lines network, to more than just members of the New Zealand Photovoltaic Association. All customers should have this option.

I urge you to build on the steps you've already taken and establish a policy of only investing in clean renewable energy sources and phase out all fossil fuels in your portfolio.

Yours sincerely,

Dear sir/ madam,

I have recently visited the Greenpeace Clean Energy Guide website at
www.CleanEnergyGuide.org and I see that your company is listed in the RED which means you currently burn coal, oil or gas for electricity - or plan to do so in the future.

Fossil fuels such as these release carbon dioxide, which directly contributes to climate change - one of the biggest threats facing our environment, economy and society.

I am disappointed to see that you have very limited energy efficiency and conservation programmes and that you don't offer an option for customers who generate their own renewable electricity on site, to sell excess electricity back into the lines network.

I urge you to establish a policy of only investing in clean renewable energy sources and phase out all fossil fuels in your portfolio.

Yours sincerely,

TO: Mercury Energy

Dear sir/ madam,

I have recently visited the Greenpeace Clean Energy Guide website at
www.CleanEnergyGuide.org and I see that your company has improved its ranking since the last edition. I understand that the main reason is because your parent generator, Mighty River Power, dropped its plans to re-fire Marsden B power station on coal. Congratulations on listening to your customers and public concerns and taking this important step to protect the climate!

I note that you offer some energy efficiency and conservation programmes and offer an option for customers who generate their own renewable electricity on site, to sell excess electricity back into the lines network.

However I also note that your company is still listed in the RED which means you currently burn coal, oil or gas for electricity - or plan to do so in the future.

Fossil fuels such as these release carbon dioxide, which directly contributes to climate change - one of the biggest threats facing our environment, economy and society.

Your parent generator Mighty River Power still has improvements to make. It still has gas generation in its portfolio and hasn't ruled out more fossil fuel developments in the future.

I urge you to build on the steps you've already taken and establish a policy of only investing in clean renewable energy sources and phase out all fossil fuels in your portfolio.

Yours sincerely,

TO: King Country Electricity

Dear Sir / Madam,

I have recently visited the Greenpeace Clean Energy Guide website at www.CleanEnergyGuide.org and I see that your company is listed in the ORANGE which means you only use renewable energy sources for electricity, but have no policy to only invest in renewable sources in the future.

Fossil fuels release carbon dioxide which directly contributes to climate change - one of the biggest threats facing our environment, economy and society.

I note that you offer some energy efficiency and conservation programmes and offer an option for customers who generate their own renewable electricity on site, to sell excess electricity back into the lines network. These are great initiatives.

However there is room for improvement. Your energy efficiency programmes could be expanded in scope and I think that you should pay at least retail price for the electricity your customers generate and sell back into the local lines network.

However, I strongly urge you to establish a policy of only investing in clean renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and hydro. This would move you into the green category of the Clean Energy Guide.

Yours sincerely,

TO: Meridian Energy

Dear Sir/Madam

I have recently visited the Greenpeace Clean Energy Guide website at www.CleanEnergyGuide.org and I see that your company is listed in the GREEN which means you only use renewable energy sources for electricity and have a policy to only invest in renewable sources in the future.

I commend you for not investing in electricity generation that involves burning fossil fuels such as gas or coal now or in the future. Such energy sources release carbon dioxide which directly contributes to climate change - the biggest threat facing our environment, economy and society.

Having a commitment to generating electricity from only clean renewable sources such as wind, solar or hydro now and into the future is essential to mitigating the impacts of climate change and I urge you to maintain this policy.

However I was disappointed to see that you are one of only two companies that don't allow customers who generate their own renewable electricity on site, to sell excess electricity back into the lines network. I urge you to reconsider this position and offer such an option in the future.

Yours sincerely,
