Now is the hour for the deep sea

Every day a fleet of around 300 bottom trawlers in international waters destroy an area of the deep-sea floor equivalent to 148 rugby fields every minute. Dragging enormous weighted nets through thousands of kilometres of vulnerable deep-sea habitat they destroy everything in their path in a search for an ever decreasing supply of orange roughy. Along with ten other nations, with just a few boats, New Zealand is amongst the worst culprits.

The destruction can be stopped and you can help

GREENPEACE TV - Bottom trawling explained

NZ has played an important role on the world stage against whaling and in keeping the Pacific nuclear free. We now have the chance to play an important role again.

A United Nations moratorium would stop bottom trawling in international waters until effective protection for deep sea life can be put in place. Dozens of countries now support for the UN moratorium and now NZ needs to join with them and bring other countries on board.

The NZ Government is currently reviewing its position on this important issue - so now is the time for you to put pressure on the politicians. Please click here to send a message to key governments.
